"Put on your wellies and head out of the door from this pub, in a village between Ashford and Tenterden, and walk 2.5 miles to Gusbourne winery for a tour and a tipple."
Back at the pub, which is surrounded by Romney sheep, settle down to a drink by the fire or a Sunday roast. Dishes on the daily menu might include Kentish rump of lamb served with sage roasted squash, pickled squash salad and feta or classics such as beer battered haddock and chips with minted peas. Special midweek stays in November and from January to March include a three-course dinner and a night in one of the five characterful rooms.
"… Expect Rye Bay scallops, skate wing and other fresh fish, plus pork chops from nearby Orchard Park Farm. Then there are proper pies, classic steaks and burgers. Puds are flavoursome and seasonal, and there’s Kent-made Chaucers camembert-style cheese…"

PUBBY CREDS: This 16th-century Kentish inn is opposite a church where Romney Marsh sheep (and lambs, if you time it right) can be seen grazing.

THE BOOZE: Weekly-changing local craft and cask guest beers, plus Kentish Pip cider. English fizz including Gusbourne and Chapel Down from Kent, and an extensive British gin list. Plenty of low-and-no options too.

THE FOOD: Expect Rye Bay scallops, skate wing and other fresh fish, plus pork chops from nearby Orchard Park Farm. Then there are proper pies, classic steaks and burgers. Puds are flavoursome and seasonal, and there’s Kent-made Chaucers camembert-style cheese.

THE ROOMS: If you’re staying, the quirky rooms (from £134 b&b) are cosy with baths in every bedroom. Ours was named after the Woolpack’s friendly ghost, but don’t let that put you off…

OUT AND ABOUT: Lots of soul-lifting walks locally, but there’s also Camber Sands, Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Derek Jarman’s House in Dungeness or Port Lympne Safari Park (which helps ensure the survival of endangered animals).

Pub of The Month
delicious.
"… At The Woolpack, you will find five characterful bedrooms plus inglenook fireplaces, low beams, welly racks and seasonal menus."
Inspired by Ridley Scott’s Napoleon? Then take a walk along the Royal Military Canal, built 1804-1809 as a defence against invasion by the Little Corporal; a Kink was made every 500m so cannons could cover each section. Fairly flat and easily navigable. it is accessible from Warehorne’s 16th-century Woolpack Inn. Walk from there to the old village of Appledore via the Saxon Shore Way, past Kenardington’s St Mary’s Church, built on the site of a Saxon fort. Return along the canal’s grassy banks, looking out for kingfishers, herons and Second World War pillboxes. Back at The Woolpack, you will find five characterful bedrooms plus inglenook fireplaces, low beams, welly racks and seasonal menus.
Britain’s finest winter walks (with a cosy pub at the end)

Shh… don’t tell BUT The Woolpack’s new head chef, Christopher Davis, is vegan himself and is planning some incredible new dishes for the menu over the coming months.
